Corkage Fee

A corkage fee is charged by a hotel or restaurant to patrons bringing their own wines to a meal. The corkage fee is usually minimal and is considered a convenience charge to the restaurant for opening and serving wines from outside their cellar. It is designed to take the sting out of the potential loss the venue will accrue if you choose to bring your own wine.

The use of a corkage fee is not widespread in Ireland because venues can attain a profit margin of between 40-70% on their wines.  How many times have you come across a €30+ bottle of wine in a restaurant that costs €10 or less in an off license?

If a venue insists on having their own wines and not offering a corkage fee, it is probably because they have invested in their list and employ a sommelier or wine expert to source quality wines.

Saving

If a venue offers a corkage fee service it is an extremely worthwhile consideration given the potential financial saving involved.
For instance...

          • if a hotel has a corkage fee of €10 for weddings – a quality wine priced between €12 - €15 from – will give you a saving of somewhere between €5 - €8 per bottle.
          • If you have 150 guests at your wedding, allowing approx .375cl per person (1/2 standard bottle) then you amass a saving of €375 - €600.
          • You guarantee that your guests will enjoy an excellent wine at your wedding whilst saving you enough money to pay for another aspect of your big day or honeymoon.
